Skokie School District 73 1/2 closed Oliver McCracken Middle School
Wednesday because of anonymous threats delivered over Instagram, and a
decision on reopening the school has yet to be made, Superintendent Kate
Donegan said.
.
She said the messages — which the school became
aware of Monday and which continued into the next day — were directed at
a sixth-grade student or students. The district said in a statement
that closing the school was in the best interest of the students and
staff.
“The
police department made absolutely no recommendation to the school
district as to what they should do, so the decision was made entirely by
the administrators themselves,” said Skokie police Officer Eric
Swaback.
Neither Swaback nor Donegan would offer specifics about the alleged threats, citing the ongoing investigation.
City officials said the situation was isolated to McCracken and did not affect any other schools in the village
