It’s a mystery that has haunted us for years: Why, oh why, does Kanye West seem so sad?

The 37-year-old rapper is obviously insanely talented and has the most drop-dead gorgeous family on the planet, yet he consistently refuses to smile for photos (though he occasionally lets one slide).


But finally, ‘Ye has revealed the real reason behind his perma-scowl: he’s throwing it old-school and channeling 19th century dudes who simply didn’t give a f–k.

During a speech at Thursday’s Fashion Los Angeles Awards, West said he was inspired by a history book he found at a Paris flea market.

“Back when I was working on Yeezus, I saw this book from the 1800s and it was velvet-covered with brass and everything,” West shared with the crowd.

 “I looked at all these people’s photos and they look so real and their outfits were incredible and they weren’t smiling and people, you know the paparazzi, always come up to me, ‘Why you not smiling?’ and I think, not smiling makes me smile.

 When you see paintings in an old castle, people are not smiling cause it just wouldn’t look as cool.”

So there you have it: We can now rest easy because, even though he may not be chirpy on the outside, Kanye is all rainbows and happy faces deep down.
